For the past few years I have been passionately campaigning for serious garden reviews, as opposed to the usual "garden stories" that appear in magazines and newspapers. I have had several articles published on the subject including 'An Artist's Plot,' in the RHS journal, The Garden, and 'Critical Mass' in the Garden Design Journal. The Garden then actually took the task on board and in the September 2004 edition they published a review by Sara Maitland * and me of East Ruston Old Vicarage. (see below) Then the Garden Design Journal followed by publishing a review of Lady Farm, Bristol by Stephen Anderton and me. (see below) And then in November 2006 Gardens Illustrated published a review of Veddw by Noel Kingsbury. (see below) I shall also be publishing reviews here, as and when I can. Here are the first ones: Veddw by Noel Kingsbury first published in 'Gardens Illustrated'. Aberglasny by Anne Wareham Alnwick by Anne Wareham with Jim Cross Lady Farm by Anne Wareham and Stephen Anderton, first published in the Garden Design Journal East Ruston Old Vicarage by Sara Maitland* and Anne Wareham, first published in the RHS Journal 'The Garden' Little Sparta by Anne Wareham Little Sparta by Tim Richardson first published in the Garden Design Journal Moreton Gardens by Anne Wareham first published in The Water Gardener The Old Zoo by Anne Beswick Chatsworth by Anne Wareham Westonbury Mill by Anne Wareham *Sara wrote 'Gardens of Illusion' with Peter Matthews (Cassells.) She has reviewed books, theatre, radio and films for a wide range of publications including The Guardian, The Spectator and The Church Times. Her most recent books are collections of short stories, 'On Becoming a Fairy Godmother'. (Maia Press '03) and 'Far North and Other Dark Tales' (Maia Press 2008). A book on silence is on its way. |
