Places to eat
and things to do
Our nearest towns of Chepstow
(5 miles) and Monmouth
(10 miles) offer the range of shops and services that you would expect
of small market towns and plenty of places to eat and drink. In the
nearby villages there are small shops at Devauden (1 mile but rarely
open), St Arvans (2 miles), Llanishen (3 miles) and Tintern (5 miles).
Gardens
There are two other gardens
fairly nearby that are open regularly.
Dewstow Gardens - rediscovered underground caves and grottos, with lunch..
Penpergwn
Lodge -should that rill run down the middle of the short side of that garden...?
There are also good garden
centres at
Raglan (01291 690873),
Chepstow (01291 626035) -
rather plastic: sells cds... but wide range of goods including rather
more stylish pots than usual-
and Millbrook, near Monmouth (01600
713770) - a gardener's garden centre: you can still
measure out your grass seed and buy labels loose.
All of the garden centres have
tea rooms.
Places
to eat
Nearby pubs that do food that
we go to regularly are:
The Rose and Crown,
Tintern - great egg and chips.
The Lion at Trellech
(01600 860322) - interesting menu
The Piercefield at
St Arvans (01291 622614) - good for large parties, lots of room, food not special.
Tintern
has several pubs, hotels and tea-rooms (eg Abbey Tea Rooms)
Things
to do
We are situated in the Wye
Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, so there is much to enjoy in
the countryside. The Wye Valley between
Chepstow and Monmouth is particularly impressive and there are many
walks to enjoy. Tintern
Abbey sits on the banks of the river Wye and was a major destination
for thr Romantic poets and tourists studying the Picturesque.
There are impressive Castles at Chepstow, Raglan and Caldicot and
no shortage of charming churches to explore. Monmouth and Chepstow both
have Leisure Centres and Monmouth has a tiny cinema. |
